During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Mr Gandhi had alleged  "women were still being sexually assaulted" in the Union Territory. After the yatra ended and 45 days later, a Delhi Police team knocked on Mr Gandhi's doors thrice in five days, which the Congress termed unprecedented harassment. Around 200 students staged a protest on Thursday at Kalakshetra Foundation, a top arts and cultural academy in Chennai, demanding justice for the survivors of alleged sexual harassment by four male faculty members. The students held placards saying "We want justice" and shouted slogans against the administration and the National Commission for Women (NCW), which they have accused of dismissing their complaints. The protest came a day after NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma made an unscheduled visit to the Kalakshetra campus. She met with the director, Revathi Ramachandran, and some of the faculty members. Students say she asked them to tell her in public, in the presence of students and faculty members about incidents of sexual harassment. "She asked one by one, 'were you molested, were you molested'. Is that the way to do an enquiry? Their aim is to cover it up," a woman student said. A former student of the academy added, "This has been going on for ye

Centre Gave SBI Rs 8,800 Crore Without Lender Asking For It, Says Auditor

The Department of Financial Services (DFS) had given Rs 8,800 crore to State Bank of India as part of recapitalisation exercise without the country's biggest lender asking for such funds in FY18, a CAG report presented in Parliament on Monday said. The department under the finance ministry did not conduct assessment of the capital requirement as per its own standard practice before recapitalisation, as per the Compliance Audit Report No. 1 of 2023 of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Union Government (Economic and Service Ministries - Civil) for the year ended March 2021. "DFS infused Rs 8,800 crore into SBI in 2017-18 for credit growth considering it the largest PSB in the country even though there was no demand. DFS did not conduct assessment of the capital requirement as per its own standard practice before recapitalisation," it said. The report further said DFS considered cushion over and above the norms prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) w

Scientists Discover Supermassive Blackhole Pointing Directly At Earth

A team of international astronomers have reclassified a galaxy after finding that a supermassive black hole in its centre has changed direction and is now aiming towards the Earth. The galaxy in question is found 657 million light-years away from us and goes by the name of PBC J2333.9-2343.  "We started to study this galaxy as it showed peculiar properties. Our hypothesis was that the relativistic jet of its supermassive black hole had changed its direction, and to confirm that idea we had to carry out a lot of observations," said Dr Lorena Hernandez-Garcia, according to the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) .  In a study, the astronomers detailed the change. According to them, the galaxy was initially classified as a radio galaxy but scientists realised that the space phenomena had rotated 90 degrees and is now pointing its centre towards Earth.  This means that the galaxy is now a "blazar", which means a galaxy point which has jet points pointing at Earth. "Will Astonish Usain Bolt": P Chidambaram On Rahul Gandhi Disqualification

Congress's former Union Minister and legal luminary P Chidambaram told NDTV today that speed with which Rahul Gandhi's defamation case moved forward in the trial court -- following a year-long break from the petitioner -- and his subsequent disqualification was extremely unusual. "It would surprise even Usain Bolt," he said, citing the Jamaican sprinting legend. He also said it was strange that while Mr Gandhi was sued for defamation in what was really slander, he received the harshest ever sentence in such a case and the magistrate who handed it, suspended it on his own.   "Why doesn't Mr Piyush Goyal or the government try and explain it," said Mr Chidambaram. "When has someone suffered a term of 2 years for slander? This was an obscure law. It shows that you can set in motion a law and silence a member of the opposition," he added. A key condition in parliaments disqualification law is that it applies to people who have received a minimum o
